Path of Exile 2: Forbidden Rites League Starter Builds — Cheap, Fast & Fresh-Economy Ready

Best league starters for PoE2 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites ranked: cheap, fast-to-maps, low-gear builds that thrive in a fresh economy with zero balance changes.

The One Thing to Know Before You Pick

Forbidden Rites launches September 4, 1 PM PDT (roughly 4 AM Sep 5 Beijing time) and runs through the 1.0 release on December 11. GGG confirmed there are zero balance changes in 0.5.5 — this is a content-and-economy event, not a balance sledgehammer.

That’s actually the best possible news for choosing a starter. You don’t need to gamble on a build surviving a nerf. The builds that are working right now in 0.5 are the ones you’ll be playing all event. No patch-day anxiety, no “did my build just get deleted?” moment.

So the real question isn’t “what’s the strongest build?” — it’s “what’s the cheapest build that gets me to maps fast and farms a fresh economy efficiently?” Because on day one, everyone’s broke. Your build’s value is directly tied to how little gear it needs to feel good.

How I Ranked These (Not a Tier-List Cop-Out)

I’m not going to hand you a generic S/A/B table and call it a day. Those lists are fine for “what’s meta,” but they ignore the part that actually kills you in a fresh league: gear dependency. A build can be S-tier on paper and still feel terrible on day two when you can’t afford a single decent weapon.

So I weighted three things, in this order:

  1. Cost to feel good. How early can the build start clearing comfortably with vendor drops and a few chaos?
  2. Gear dependency. Does it need a specific unique or a perfect weapon roll to function, or does it scale off the skill itself?
  3. Fresh-economy fit. Does it get you into maps fast and farm efficiently while prices are still insane? Bonus points if it doesn’t fight over the same in-demand gear as everyone else.

I’ve played (and died a lot on) every build below across 0.5. If I say a build “feels good on a budget,” I mean it — not “technically it can work if you trade for a 10-div weapon.”

One note up front: we’ve got a full deep-dive comparing all eight 0.5 builds over here. If you want the complete pros/cons, passive tree ideas, and endgame ceiling for each one, head there. This guide is purely about leveling: getting to maps on the least gold at the fastest speed. No overlap here.

TL;DR Quick Picks (30-Second Challenge)

Don’t have time to read the whole thing? Pick from here.

RankBuildIn One LineBest For
đŸ„‡ Top PickED/Contagion LichThe most hands-off, cheapest DoT in the whole event — rides Delirium all the way to maps without swapping gearAnyone who wants to cruise through leveling without hunting for gear
đŸ„ˆ 2ndIce Shot DeadeyeBest screen-clear in the game, and the Deflect rework finally patched its defenseFast hands, love that satisfying clear
đŸ„‰ 3rdTwisters Spirit WalkerCommunity-consensus S+ in 0.5.5 — high strength, but needs a bit of skillPlayers chasing the ceiling and willing to learn mechanics
④Whirling Assault Martial ArtistCheapest tier of melee, punch for punchMelee lovers on a super tight budget
â‘€Poison PathfinderBest value in poison — extremely undemanding about gearHighest forgiveness, want to take it slow

Why isn’t the “strongest” Twisters / Ice Shot my top pick? Because leveling isn’t about the ceiling — it’s about how high the floor is. ED/Contagion has an extremely high floor: you don’t need to know anything, you don’t need to buy anything, and Delirium progress still flies. To me, a build you can comfortably clear maps with without spending gold is the best build in a fresh economy.

đŸ„‡ Top Pick: ED/Contagion Lich — The Leveling God

This is the build I pick for almost every league start, because it’s undemanding about gear to an absurd degree.

The core is Essence Drain + Contagion: Contagion spreads a curse across a pack of monsters, and ED drains life from the cursed targets. Let the curse spread first, then drop ED, and packs fall like dominoes. In Delirium (the 0.5 league mechanic), a wave of high-density enemies is basically a fireworks show for this build.

Why it fits a fresh economy:

Tip About 0.5.5: In this event, Ritual appears in every main city zone, plus a new Wildwood Wisps system. For a DoT build like ED/Contagion, this is pure upside — DoT doesn’t care about the monster type, so those Ritual “revive and fight again” monsters simply start bleeding again the moment you drop an ED on them.

Warning The build’s only real early bottleneck is spell level — don’t force flat damage. If you spot a wand with ”+(1) to Level of all Spell Skills,” grab it even if the other mods are bad. You’ll feel the difference around Acts 3~4.

TL;DR quick leveling Put all passives into DoT and chaos damage, skip crit. Grab a +1 spell-level green wand, then start clearing Delirium straight away. You can ride it through the campaign on vendor drops alone — no trading needed.

đŸ„ˆ 2nd Pick: Ice Shot Deadeye — Screen-Clear King, Now Tankier

If DoT feels too slow and you want that “one arrow, one screen” rush, Ice Shot Deadeye is the answer. Ice shards explode on hit, freeze and shatter packs instantly, and it feels amazing.

Why this season is worth it: the 0.5 Deflect rework made defense scale off Evasion — a portion of your Evasion converts into Deflection, so the higher your Evasion, the more damage reduction you get. Deadeye stacks Evasion naturally, so it basically gets a free defensive layer, plus ice freeze for control. This might be the most balanced Deadeye has been in PoE2.

Why it fits a fresh economy:

Warning Squishy early. Ranger comes out with low life and low defense; Acts 1~2 are when you’ll die the most. Don’t greed for damage — stay alive first, and put passives into life and Evasion before damage. Ice damage also gets stuck against high cold-resist maps, so have an Exposure option ready (Frost Bomb is more than enough).

Tip Your whole defensive plan rides on Hyrri’s Ire (“Evasion Rating is doubled if you have not been Hit Recently”). Since Deflection converts from your final Evasion rating, doubling your Evasion effectively doubles your Deflection too — which is why I’d call it the best-value piece this season. Grab one if you see it cheap.

đŸ„‰ 3rd Pick: Twisters Spirit Walker — Community-Consensus S+ in 0.5.5

This is the build that nearly the whole 0.5.5 community tier list puts at the S+ top. Once you understand the mechanic, Twisters clears screens without getting nerfed and still shreds bosses once they’re spun in.

What makes it good:

Warning It’s the most skill-demanding of the five. A new player might not get it on day one and think it’s trash. Give it patience, learn the spin positioning and coverage, and it carries you from maps all the way to endgame. Don’t rage-quit just because the first two Acts feel weak.

④ 4th Pick: Whirling Assault Martial Artist — Cheapest Melee Tier

If you love that punch-for-punch melee feel, this is the lowest-budget answer. It’s also S+ in 0.5.5.

Why it’s cheap: the core is Power Charge Whirling Assault, which community budget rankings put near the top for 0.5. It converts strength into charges, so gear pressure is much lower than you’d expect from melee. Just a decent two-hander and you can push from Act 1 to maps without much trouble.

Tip Don’t rush attack speed early. Stack strength and charge tiers first. Whirling Assault’s damage comes mostly from charge conversion, not attack speed.

â‘€ 5th Pick: Poison Pathfinder — Highest-Forgiveness Value Pick

Poison has always been the “high floor” build in PoE2. Poison Pathfinder is extremely undemanding about gear — it uses poison stacking, so even a bad gear set can grind down bosses.

Great for players on a very tight budget, who don’t want to play perfectly, and who value forgiveness. Poison was tuned down in 0.5 (less poison duration from Overwhelming Toxicity, and Toxic Growth got a smaller cap too), but it’s still plenty for leveling — its strength is consistency, not hitting a speed ceiling.

Warning Poison’s pack-clearing burst is average — don’t expect a one-arrow-one-screen like Ice Shot. Its fun comes from “I can clear with bad gear,” not “I clear fast.”

Three Leveling Rules That Matter More Than Your Build

Picking the right build is step one, but whether you actually level smoothly depends on how you use the fresh economy. Here are three rules I learned from dying to my own mistakes:

1. For the first 48~72 hours, time is money

The most profitable window in a fresh economy is the first couple of days. Price swings are the biggest, information gaps are widest, and basic consumables are the most expensive. You don’t need to rush to max level — used well, these days can earn your whole league’s starting capital.

2. Don’t fight the whole server for the same hot item

This is the easiest trap in a fresh economy. Everyone stares at the same must-have unique, and the price gets bid to the moon. Your build should be able to sidestep those hot items during leveling. Of the five above, ED/Contagion and Poison Pathfinder are built for exactly this — they don’t need that pricy piece at all.

3. Get to maps first, optimize later

A lot of new players obsess over passives and skill setup while still in the Acts. In reality, during leveling your decisions matter far less than your speed. Use the skills that feel good and the transitional gear you’ve picked up, and push for maps. Only after maps do you have a stable income stream and better gear to build on — then come back and optimize. For leveling details, see our fast leveling-to-endgame guide.
