Totem Summoner Build Guide - Remote Destruction
Complete guide to the Totem Summoner build in PoE2 patch 0.5. Place devastating totems from safety and let them destroy everything in range.
Totem Summoner Build Guide
The Totem Summoner places powerful totems that attack enemies automatically while you stay at a safe distance. This build combines the safety of a summoner with the damage output of a direct DPS build, making it excellent for both beginners learning boss mechanics and experienced players optimizing endgame clear speed. Your totems become your army, your damage dealers, and your statement of intent.
Build Overview
| Aspect | Rating |
|---|---|
| Clear Speed | Good |

| Gear Dependency | Medium |
| Mechanical Difficulty | Medium |
Class: Warrior or Monk with totem support Damage Type: Varies (Physical, Fire, or Lightning) Weapon: Sceptre or Staff Playstyle: Place totems, stay behind them, let them deal damage
Why This Build Works
The Totem build solves one of the biggest problems new players face: staying alive while dealing damage. By placing totems that attack autonomously, you can focus entirely on positioning and survival while your totems handle the damage dealing. This separation of concerns makes the build remarkably forgiving while still scaling to endgame-level damage.
Core Advantages
- Remote damage โ Totems attack from their placement position while you stay safe behind them. You never need to be in danger to deal damage.
- Flexible damage types โ Can scale physical totems, fire totems, or lightning totems depending on your preference and available gear.
- Multiple totems โ With the right passive nodes, you can have 2-3 totems active simultaneously, multiplying your damage output.
- Ancestral Bond keystone โ This powerful keystone grants an additional totem slot, enabling even more simultaneous totems for overwhelming area coverage.
- Safe gameplay โ Ideal for learning boss mechanics since you can focus on dodging while totems handle damage.
How Totem Damage Scales
Totem damage is unique because it comes from the totem itself, not directly from your character:
- Totem damage modifiers on passive tree and gear
- Totem life โ Tankier totems survive longer and deal damage for more time
- Your spell/attack damage โ Totems inherit a percentage of your damage stats
- Support gems linked to the totem skill โ Same as any other skill link
- Totem placement speed โ Faster placement means more totems deployed quickly
Skill Gem Setup
Main Link (6-link)
- Seismic Cry or Explosive Totem โ Primary totem skill. Seismic Cry creates a totem that slams the ground dealing physical AoE damage. Explosive Totem deals fire damage in a large radius.
- Melee Physical Damage or Elemental Damage โ Scale the totemโs primary damage type. Use physical for Seismic, elemental for fire or lightning totems.
- Increased Area of Effect โ Wider totem damage coverage means more enemies hit per slam.
- Totem Life โ This support gem dramatically increases your totemโs health pool, allowing them to survive longer in dangerous situations.
- Spell Totem or related support โ Converts your skill into a totem that acts independently.
- Concentrated Effect for boss damage or Ruthless for per-hit physical damage โ Choose based on whether you prioritize single-target burst or sustained AoE.
Secondary Totem Skills
Carry multiple totem types for different situations:
- Rejuvenation Totem โ Provides life regeneration aura for you and nearby allies
- Lightning Tower Totem โ Lightning damage in a beam pattern, excellent for corridor clearing
- Flame Totem โ Sustained fire damage over an area, great for pack clearing
- War Banner Totem โ Increases attack damage for you and allies over time
Support Skills
- Dash or Shield Charge โ Essential movement skill for repositioning. You need to move to place totems optimally.
- Warcries โ Buff your totems and yourself simultaneously. Enduring Cry provides life recovery while boosting totem effectiveness.
- Banner skills โ Area damage amplification that benefits both you and your totems.
- Fortify โ Damage reduction while in combat, stacking with your totemsโ tanking.
Auras
- Determination โ Massive armour bonus helps you survive hits that get past your totems.
- Herald of Ash โ Additional fire damage that triggers on kill, supplementing totem damage.
- Grace or Defiance Banner โ Additional defensive layer for survivability.
Passive Tree Priorities
Key Notable Clusters
-
Totem Damage cluster โ Your core damage scaling. These nodes directly increase the damage your totems deal. Prioritize nodes giving +% totem damage and totem attack speed.
-
Totem Life nodes โ Tankier totems mean longer-lasting damage dealers. A totem that survives 30 seconds instead of 10 deals three times the damage. This is often more valuable than raw damage nodes.
-
Ancestral Bond keystone โ If available in your tree path, this is a must-take. It grants an additional totem slot, allowing you to run multiple totems simultaneously. The damage multiplication from 2-3 totems far outweighs the loss of one equipped item.
-
Life and Defence nodes โ Your personal survivability. Even with totems tanking, you will take occasional hits. Stack life and armour/evasion as normal.
-
Damage nodes matching your damage type โ If running fire totems, take fire damage nodes. If physical, take physical nodes. Your totems inherit your damage scaling.
Tree Pathing Strategy
Start from the Warrior/Monk starting area, targeting:
- Totem cluster (highest priority)
- Ancestral Bond keystone (critical if accessible)
- Life nodes around the center area
- Damage nodes matching your totemโs damage type
- Totem placement speed nodes
Gear Priorities
What to Look For
Weapon (Sceptre/Staff):
- +Level to totem gems โ This is the single most valuable weapon modifier for this build
- Totem damage modifiers
- Life and resistances
- Totem placement speed
Priority order:
- Weapon โ +Level to totem gems is massive. Each additional level dramatically increases totem effectiveness.
- Body Armour โ Life and resistances are your primary defence.
- Helmet โ Totem-specific modifiers and life.
- Gloves โ Totem placement speed (reduces the animation lock) and life.
- Boots โ Movement speed for positioning and resistances.
- Jewellery โ Damage and resistances to fill gaps.
Key Stats by Slot
| Slot | Priority Stats |
|---|---|

| Armour | Life, resistances, totem life |
| Helmet | Totem damage, life, resistances |
| Gloves | Placement speed, life |
| Boots | Movement speed, resistances |
| Rings | Damage, resistances |
| Amulet | Totem damage, life |

Boss Tips
General Totem Boss Strategy
- Place totems at maximum range โ Position your totems as far from the boss as possible while still hitting. This keeps you even further back.
- Replace destroyed totems quickly โ Bosses often target and destroy totems. Have your placement skill ready to replace them immediately.
- Use warcries to buff totems โ Many warcries buff all nearby totems. Time these for maximum damage windows.
- Stay mobile while totems handle damage โ Your job is positioning and survival. Let the totems deal with the boss.
- Multiple totem angles โ If you have multiple totems, place them at different angles to prevent the boss from destroying them all at once.
Specific Boss Approaches
Count Grenor: Place totems on opposite sides of the arena. He can only attack one direction at a time.
Jamanra: Place totems early in the fight. Replace during his attack animations. Phase transitions are good windows for repositioning.
Doryani: Place totems at range. His teleport makes positioning tricky; predict his landing spots and place totems accordingly.
Tavakai: Phase 1-2 totems work well. Phase 3 requires more caution as his area attacks can destroy multiple totems quickly.
